Dear Unka Trunk,
I have a bunch of buds in garage type bands (two bands). They are looking for some portable recording solutions. Sort of a studio in-a-box recording to a hard drive. Maybe some computer editing software too. Also could you recommend some microphones, a pair to start with that can also handle a cab. I am not sure of the price range but considering the folks in question, funds will be somewhat limited. Used gear is a possibility. I may buy the software and mics to help them out.
I have a set of three Nakamichi CM-300s that I can use if I can find batteries. Also I have a Rode NT4 that I got when I was shooting allot of video. The Naks may not have a hight enough SPL for cabs and the Rode is stereo... All useful but I would still like a nice pair (wouldn't we all). I'm looking at Audio Technica AT4041s but something a little less expensive would be nice if I end up having to buy them.
Any thoughts or recommendations?

Also, do compressed mp3 files (say 126 kbps) that make their way through the intertubes to various computers and then back on the internet and so on, "deteriorate" over time? Or are low quality rips simply low quality for life?

However, if you're looking to do live multi-track, you really need to do some minor trickery in finding two mixing boards with multiple sends (ideally 8-16 sends).
