I'm not a horologist but i might be able to help.
They're usually round and flattish. Usually they're made of metal on the back and on the front they have a clocklike appearance. They're not too big... you could probably get it in your pocket.
If you put them near your ear you can often, though not always, hear a sound that goes TRICK TRACK or something like that.
