do a search on google or bimmerfest re: 2001 S54 failures - PLENTY of data out there. after fierce and ugly fighting BMW NA finally admitted the problems and extended engine warranty to 6yr/100k

Engine problems were in engines built from mid-01 to mid-02 and were the result of changing vendors for some internals.

Buying an 02 does not ensure a trouble free engine. BMW has performed recalls on affected engines, and extented the engine warrantee to 100K miles.

There is no need to stay away from the build dates of concern, because if you have problems you get a new engine.

My M3 does not fall into the affected catagory - it has a 01/01 build date. If I read my VIN correctly, it is the 73 E46 M3 to enter the country.

I buy and sell M3's, the 01-04's ,and I hate to say it but you will be lucky to get $35k for your car retail. You will not get close to $39k on it. I just sold one to a guy the other day an 02 SMG with 19k miles for $40k even and that was pushing it. Good luck on the sale though. if you get closer to wholesale like $32-33k I can sell the car for you...

Those prices seem low. I see good condition 01s go for $35-36K all day on ebay. Good luck with the sale

Maybe so, but on the wholesale market people buy and sell low mileage 01 M's for $33k and less all day long. I hope he gets a ton out of it but he will just have to find the right buyer at his asking price and most people buying M3's educate themselves quite a bit about their value before they purchase. Good luck on your sale.
