with gas prices these days and working in charlotte, the drive to and from union county to work 5 times a week would negate the tax savings you would recieve from living so far out. Also, emergency services take longer to reach you the further out you live. And DSL works slower!

20 miles a day X 5 days =100 miles... 100/25 MPG = 4 gal. extra a week. 4 gal/week X 3.04 a gallon = $12.12 a week.....$12.12 a week X 52 = $630.24 a year.

And that's if you dont go anywhere for fun in charlotte or do extra driving and only if one person drives to work.

It USED to be affordable to live outside meckelnburg until gas prices went up........it is STILL beneficial for people who own houses worth over $350,000!
I still beleive that the tax savings still out weighs the cost of gas or travel time. I guess it would depend where in CHarlotte you are living. If you live on the north side of town you would still have the issue of traffic, for that matter anywhere around Charlotte you have a problem with traffic.

I'll keep this in mind as I look around... fortunately I will be working from home most of the time, so that will cut back on overall gas costs. I will be sure to compare local tax rates though since there seems to be some disagreement on how much the savings will actually be.

I'll remember that next time you need yard work or your car worked on... I hope you haven't been telling all of these nice people that you actually do any that work to your car yourself
Vdandy, to give you an idea of the savings, when I lived in Charlotte I was paying around $8,000.00 a year I now pay in Weddington around $1,900.00 per year. I also think the Weddington Schools are better.

Don't worry Raul, I'm not moving to Charlotte!

My son will be heading that way as his girlfriend just got a job as a teacher with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School district.

Was wondering if you could let me know what parts of town he should stay away from, and which parts would be good for a couple of 25 year olds....

They are looking at buying a house, so any area that is "good", plus has inexpensive houses would be a plus...

Thanks,
Hey Mike,

We'll only be about 1 1/2 - 2 hours away from Charlotte. We'll have to get together when you come to visit them! We can drive over and harass Raul.

the "expected" completion date for 485 is 2011. and now there is talk of holding off the northern loop to widen the southwestern leg around ballantyne/pineville........

no way the average homeowner pays 8,000 a year in property tax. that's 750 bucks a month! My parents have a 145K mortgage and pay 183 a month in tax on a 180K house value and they live in matthews, which is still meck. county.

oh, and try to stay away from the university area. It's not that the students make it ghetto, the ghetto makes it ghetto. The city is starting to hand out section 8 housing permits all over the damn place in U.City. It's a shame, b/c it's a beautifully designed area.

Welcome ydnandy! At which school will your wife be working? Ron and I are also near Matthews (inside Hwy 51) and we love this area. Near SouthPark, Matthews, downtown, etc, and unless you want new construction-only, there are some good areas to check out around here.

Plus...Raul and his garage for tech days is only 10 minutes away!

I agree with Dre, though; have them check out downtown if condo living is an option.

And Mikey....I hope this means you may actually come visit us in the lovely Queen city from time to time?
