Default What's the best (quickest) route from Charlotte to Raleigh? (road construction, etc.)

I'm going to try to make a day trip Saturday to Raleigh to see the Titanic Exhibit.

Is there any better route than 77, 85, 40 (3hrs)? I'd hate to be bogged down in traffic due to construction.

Would it be better to take US-74 to US-1 (3hrs 45min)?

Thanks

I think the worst part is 77/85 up until exit 45 (UNCC) after that it is pretty smooth until the Greensboro area (construction), then smooth again all the way.

It should be pretty easy traffic Saturday Morning. I usually take 1 hour 40 minutes from exit 45 to exit 283 (I-40). From there to downtown Raleigh is another 15-20 minutes.

Thanks for the info.

I knew that 77 & 85 wouldn't be to bad early Saturday, but I havn't been on 40 for a while, so I didn't know the status of construction. Still Greensboro, oh well.

Thanks again.

The most important thing is to watch what time you go through the University area. Sat. morning around 11-1 can be a real hassle too. Try to go as early as you can.

If 85 is backed up when you get back into CLT take the new 485. There is only one spot yet to complete but other than that its fast and easy.

their are alternate routes. The best back roads up here are 49N (u catch this up at university) to 64E. you can bypass 40 and still take 85, by hitting 64E(just make sure u take the new 64E (yes, there is an "old 64" exit. 64 will take u thru Apex into cary, where u will Join US1 and eventually hit the inner loop - 440.

Busch is right (Can't believe I said that! ) The route up 49/64 is a great alternative. The small towns slow you down, but there are great stretches through Pisgah Nat. Forest, and some other 2-lane stretches where passing is FUN!

Much more scenic and interesting than the interstates. Shorter miles, but takes the same amount of time because of the towns.
