Default update to vtec not workin

figure out i have low oil pressure. at idle exactly 22 psi and at 3,000 rpm 88 psi ---still no vtec bc of the low oil pressure. the rpm keeps climinbing when i acclerate past 6,000 but cuts out at 8,500. can anyone guide me in the right direction on where to look next.... theres all kinds of internal parts that could be wrong bc of low oil pressure, but what is the most common problem on an ap1 with 105,000 miles and how to test that part, or different parts in general. how do i norrow it down??? please help me someone this is driving me nuts.... no vtec is the worst...

That is not low oil pressure. I am assuming you have a gauge? When you start it up in the morning (cold engine) you should see the highest pressure. I think mine is around 80ish, but after a ride and everything gets all nice and warm, if you are seeing 22, you have no oil pressure issues. There have been guys who have posted 10 - 15 psi and still not worried. I think the switch that turns the light on is set at 8psi or something low like that...has that light ever come on?

have you had any motor work done recently? Loose cam cap bolts will keep vtec from working but a gauge will still show good oil pressure.

Hey thanks for the response, def a good idea but how do I check them??? There has been no motor work done lately is there still a way for them to come loose still and where is the location of the cam bolts?

It is highly unlikely that they would come loose on their own.. next to impossible.

If you havent I would take the vtec soleniod off and inspect it for debris.

You're in durham.. if you cant get it worked up take a ride up hwy98 to wake forest and come see us

I'm not getting any reading from the vtec oil pressure sensor could that be bad is there any way to test this??? And how likly is it to have a faulty map sensor due with the vtec???

If the vtp isnt turning on when vtec engages then you have an oil pressure issue at the vtec solenoid.. could be clogged screen, vtec solenoid not working etc.

Map sensor would not cause this with out other drivability issues

I agree. To answer your pm question about testing the vtec pressure sensor, you either hook it to a pressure source and test for continuity, or run a wire from the sensor to the cab and hook it to a indicator and test drive it. You can also see if the solenoid is getting a signal the same way. You can tap off of the ecu if you want, but it's dummy proof at the sensor.

If the vtec signal is firing something is wrong with either the pressure at the valve, the screen is clogged, the coil burned out on the valve, or the plunger is seized. The last two are rare.
