The TV was homesick

The TV was homesick
We got our furniture on Monday May 3rd. After a very long 10 weeks we were happy to get something soft to sit and sleep on. We setup the bedroom first and everything was going Ok until I started working on the home theater setup.
We had done our homework before shipping the stuff and had decided to bring everything over. The DVD player and the VCR are multi-voltage and multi-system so they posed no problem. The TV and Stereo on the other hand would not handle the 220V of current we have here so we bought a couple of step down transformers back in Feb and shipped them with the stuff.
I plugged everyting in (included the brand new TV tuner with integrated HD recorder - since the tv singal is different here the TV was relegated to being a monitor only appliance). Then I flicked the power on and both the TV and Stereo started making a humming noise. No option but to unplug them....
Double checked the transformers, plugged the stereo back on. Noise again. Cross my fingers and turned it on. Humming was a little louder but not much. Left it on for 5 minutes... no smoke.... moving on to the TV.
Plugged the TV in... humming noise.... turned it on.... Noise got really loud... turned off and uplugged. Check rating on the transformer... check rating on TV... couldn't find the wattage rating.... couldn't find the manual.... maybe I'll leave it on for 5 minutes and see what happens..... cross my fingers... turn it on... humming noise really loud..... turn on the tuner.... TV picture comes up... TV makes a clicking noise and turns off! WTF?? it wasn't on even 45 seconds!!
TV makes no noise and won't turn on..... must be the fuse. Out comes the trusty phillips head screw driver....10 minutes later... TV is open and fuse has been found (blown ofcourse). Can't find a replacement, it is 7pm and everything is closed..... sit around for a while.
Hey I have an idea! What about the old 'cigarrete paper" trick?. That oughtta do it!. Problem is, I don't smoke so there is no cigarrete paper around!..... Option B: Paper clip!. A valiant clip gives its life to be chopped up and placed in the TV with the blown fuse.... put tv back together.... plug it in... humming noise... turn it on..... loud humming.... TV signal being displayed... on for more than 45 seconds.... Let's watch some TV!
3 minutes later... KKKKKKAAAAABOOOOOOMMMMMMM!!!! Lots of smoke coming out of the TV... no burnt wire smell... just a weird oily smell......
After careful inspection I find that one of the capacitors in the power supply has blown.... TV is no good anymore unless I can find a 200v 560picofarads capacitor. This has proven quite difficult over the last few days.
My wife summed it up nicely: "TV was homesick and is throwing a tantrum!"
Will I have to buy a new TV?.... I hear plasma TVs are quite cheap nowadays... mmmmm

Well... the 'Blown TV' adventure of Cashout continues: Can't find the capacitor anywhere (event he US). So I am off to make my own (by connecting lower Farad rated capacitors in Paralell - Don't you love the internet??:-) )
I'll buy the parts tomorrow and give it a try. You may think I am crazy... well, I am ... a little... but you have to remember the TV doesn't work anyway! ;-)
Will post an update tomorrow

IT WORKS!!!
I made a little circuit with the three capacitors, solder it on to the main board and plugged it in. Nothing happened at first, which wasa disappointing but after realizing that nothing was going to happen until I chaged the blown fuse (duh!) it was all smooth sailing.
The TV did a couple of self degaussing tasks but after 2 minutes it was working fine!
Capacitors : $20
PCB kit and connectors : $10
Knowing that you are the Master Of Capacitors: Priceless!!!
