Pigeon Forge area is really nice area and Gatlinburg is a 15 minute drive away. There is a lot of family things to do in that area. Also cabins rentals aren't really all that bad to rent. Last year three friends and I went to Pigeon Forge for a three day and our cabin was around $300 so not that bad.

I'm a big fan of Fontana Village near the dragon. They have a full agenda of events you can get involved in every weekend. Putt-putt tournaments, disc-golf, bike rentals, hiking trails, swimming pool/lazy river, etc. Evening activities will be bluegrass music, bingo, ping-pong tournaments, etc. Also, there's lots of rafting, hiking, biking, horseback riding, etc. opportunities in the area. You can also rent a house-boat as a fun alternative to a cabin.

I think Asheville is over-priced, but it is a neat place to wander around in. But as Gamecock says, Fontana is so close to The Dragon that it is hard to pass up. Also, you may want to check what is available around Brevard, NC. Probably less $$$ than Asheville, but located near some great roads
See this favorite drive:
There are some fun places for the family at Sliding Rock (along US 276 in the Pisgah National Forest, or hiking to the top of Mt. Pisgah (on the Blue Ridge Parkway)
