Cage is for wheel-to-wheel racing.
I could be wrong or received wrong info from VIR but it is my understanding that VIR will not allow the S2K w/o a cage for anything but "low speed" charity events. I know the SCCA approves the S2K as having factory roll protection but individual clubs and tracks also have rules like the broomstick rule or no cage no run for convertibles. NCCAR in garysburg does allow the S2K w/o a cage for at least HPDE events.
A roll CAGE like this one [attachment=7858:Cage4.jpg] is not required for HPDE. Only wheel-to-wheel race cars use them.

From my understanding NASA's southeast region has HPDE's at CMP and NCCAR in Roanoke Rapids that will allow S2K's without aftermarket roll bars. I was on NCCAR myself without a rollbar in my S2K at a HPDE in Apr.

Last time I checked, S2K's without aftermarket roll bar are ok @ NCCAR with any group. That track is a big, flat, continuous skidpad with a long straight - no elevation change at all at any point. Also, the paved surface is wider than other tracks.

you can run CMP, Roebling, NCCAR, Road Atlanta, Taladega Grand Prix without a rollbar, not sure about Charlotte MotorSpeedway
VIR and Barber you need a bar
getting a bar is a good idea
