Forget S-pods, headrest speakers, or any additional speakers - not worth the money or complexity and not part of the system you are after. If you get good speakers and a good head unit, the four component speakers in the doors will sound great and will be more than enough to fill the cabin, top up or down.
If you're not looking to spend ridiculous amounts of money, the bang for the buck option is simply new speakers and a new HU and you can wire that all in yourself. This will give you a great "normal" system (as opposed to stock garbage) that you will be able to hear at speed. After that, add an amp and wiring to bring more volume, and possibly a sub when and if the budget allows.
If you're not going to upgrade the HU, don't bother upgrading the system - good sound starts with a good stereo and the stiock HU is useless. Start with a $200-250 quality HU like an Alpine and good component speakers that offer great midrange bass like Polk Audios ($200-300) or kappas. Also factor in a Modifry Dash Control Interface (get the wiring harness from Modifry too - makes install super easy) to keep the dash controls working at $100. $500-600 is a good basic system you can install yourself in about 3 hours, and plenty of people here can help.
An upgraded sound system is worth its price every time you are cruising and want to listen to music - the difference is night and day.

Take it from me, I did my first install all by myself with the help of the Electronic Forum stickies. I was really particular in running the wires, so doing by myself, I can sleep better at night.
