Smile SC Property Taxes

Just got the tax bill on my new 07.

Evidently the assessed value of the car is more than I paid for it OTD.

Anyone want to provide me with an "appraisal"?

Since we live in good 'ole North Cackalaki...we don't have high property taxes on our cars...but I've heard folks say they visit a CarMax and use that as their "appraisal." PM Garrett (GameCockS2K) or Bryan (SC_Highlander) for details.

Taxes SUCK...

I've heard Lexington County quit accepting CarMax appraisals. Not sure about Richland. I'd, at the very least, take in your bill of sale and also a print out of a Kelly Blue Book "good" value printout to prove your car is not worth $33k or whatever they're saying.

Good luck.

They have free windshields and no inspections in Florida and it only cost about $40 a year to register the S2000.

How much does it cost to register in Greenville County, SC; dollar wise or percentage wise?

2005: $453.44 (includes $15 DMV road fee)
2006: $413.18 (includes $15 DMV road fee, $24 plate renewal)
2007: $314.45 (includes $15 DMV road fee)
2008: $274.16 (includes $15 DMV road fee, $24 plate renewal)

For what it's worth, when I lived in Ohio we didn't have property taxes on cars. It was a complete surprise when we became residents here. However, property taxes her are wayyyyyyyyyyyy lower. So in my opinion it is still cheaper to live here. As far as inspections, I wish we had EPA inspections here. I can't tell you the number of times I get behind some beater with a bad exhaust and get fumed out of my car.

Lexington county sucks:

2003: $1,065.78
2004: $944.50
2005: $568.00
2006: $317.79
2007: $257.17

Same way here, we pay $24 every other year for the tag. I've got no clue about the $15 DVM fee... somehow, it just doesn't seem to be that relevant to me.

As you can probably see, I started doing the CarMax thing in 2005.

Richland/City of Columbia have me at $857 right now. I'm going to try that CarMax thing, though I'd rather them not drive it.
