Painted my Calipers this weekend (write up & pics)(56k warning)
#1
Well, I spent the weekend in town so I decided to paint my Calipers. I decided to go with Black paint to keep the whole black/silver theme going.
So here is what I did:
Saturday
-Cleaned the calipers with rubbing alcohol, then soap and water.
-Brush painted all 4 calipers with Rustoleum black paint (purchased at Home Depot). Gave them 1 coat each. Let dry for about 20 hours or so.
Sunday
-Masked off Rotors and Fenders.
-Spray painted the calipers with 1200 degree Hi-Temp black paint (purchased at Auto Zone).
-Gave each caliper 3 coats and waited about 20 minutes between coats.
-After final spray, waited about 1 hour and applied s2000 decal to front calipers.
-Sprayed High Gloss Polyurethane (purchased at Home Depot) on all 4 calipers. This was done to give them a little shine and to protect the decals (as per suggestions from Stingerbtry).
-Waited about 30 minutes and applied a second Polyurethane coat.
What I learned:
-I think I may have "overpainted 1 caliper" I am going to see how the paint settles over the next week and decide if I need to sand it down and touch it up. I went a little crazy with the spray paint at first haha.
-The spray paint method was very easy as compared to the brush method. There are lots of little spaces that the brush did not catch. I used a fine watercolor brush to get in those hard to reach places. That is time consuming and a PITA.
-When I brush painted the initial coat, I did get a some paint on the Rotor. There are 2 reasons why I am not overly concerned about that. 1, when the brakes are applied, the paint will wear right off. 2, my cross drilled/slotted rotors are being shipped out on Tuesday
-Not too sure if I like the decals. After I get my rotors, I will decide if I am going to keep them, or sand them off.
Cost:
-Rustoleum black paint - $6
-Polyurethane spray - $5
-High Temp Black Spray Paint - $5
-1.5" Paint Brush - $5
-3 Watercolor Brushes - $1
-S2000 Decals -$15
-Painted Calipers - PRICELESS (haha, I know I am a cornball)
Enough of my babble, here are a couple of pics.....
