get what you know how to use. it'll save time and frustration. it sounds like you arent paying for the comp(??). so, id get a dell xps. they are pushing 3k. but, its basically a desktop for gamers you can take on trips, etc....keep in mind its 10 pounds!
if you really want the powerbook, they are nice. i really think they are slow for most programs though. people like apples for video dvd rendering because the top of the line software is really cheap. not that its the best thing to use. i doubt you'll be selling s2k dvds at blockbuster though...but maybe if you are footing the bill for apple, find someone in college(anu, etc...) and they get a nice discount. usually around 10-15%
dont think i know what im talking about? heres my old computer set up

the thing with video is that you spend an hour preppying and then an hour waiting...you really arent on the comp a lot unless you are capturing video or have 8 pcs like i did with a gig network. so, you can bounce around from comp to comp.

Stability-wise the Mac is the better by far. But I work on a Mac everyday so Im kinda biased. The only difference is it costs more to upgrade a Mac when it is time to do so. I have owned a G4 for 4 years now and its JSUt now needing a CPU upgrade. Id get the G5 if I had the choice of a computer as those things are just awesome. Expensive but worth it.

Huskergirl,
Go with the IBM clone.
Mac's are very good for graphics and most large companies have a handful laying around.
However, the IBM will be more versatile and you will have much more software to choose from.
Technically, a high end P-4 with hyperthreading, etc is much faster than a Mac.
I will concede that Microsoft software has way too much overhead which prevents the PC from being as fast as it should but I think a PC with XP Multimedia and Adobe Premiere is your best best.
