^^Good info lol Southpoint seems to be the consensus thus far for where I should contain my search radius to. Do you have any suggestions for particular apt. complexes?
If you're the downtown living hipster type, I'm pretty sure some of the old tobacco warehouses in Durham have been turned into apartments - but those usually aren't cheap.
The previous poster is right though, that there are some places in Durham that I don't think you want to be in after sundown. The way I typically look at it is this. If the sat nav tells me to go a certain way in Durham, and I don't recognize the names of the roads...I'll probably find a different way.

It's ok. It's a nice place, typical stuff like lots of restaurants, decent sized mall, movies, etc. Not a whole lot to do other than that though. She going to Wake?
Also, does anybody from Durham or surrounding areas (Morrisville, Apex, etc.) know roughly how much townhouses rent for or where I could find one as an alternative to apartments?

Give me a call, My wife is a realtor and she can find houses and townhomes for rent off MLS. She can also help with apartments, and the best part is it doesn't cost you, the buyer, anything.
I also rented in durham for 2 years before buying in Raleigh.
southpoint is probably your best bet, also 1520 Magnolia was nice and brand new when i stayed there.

Just mapped the location exactly, you could also try chapel hill off of 15/501, depends on what scene you like. CH is more college stuff mixed with granola, durham is hit or miss but more regular, raleigh is more young professional, but you will have a hike for your commute.

***I just remembered that a buddy of mine stayed at the apartments at Brier Creek, he had an attached garage. I will see if i can find the complex name for you.
