Hey, we have a history, we just plowed it under in the 70's in the name of urban renewal.

Did you know that Charlotte is not really named after Queen Charlotte? Turns out, Charlotte was built at the crossroads of two trading paths (now Trade & Tryon). Now with all of the traffic going by, certain establishments were built to provide for the needs of the travelers.

One of them was a brothel run by a hardy madam named (you guessed it) Charlotte. The business was known as "Charlotte's Place." Over time, the name got shortened as names do and the crossroads became just Charlotte.

As the town grew and the city fathers longed for more respectability, they had to come up with a better story to tell the visitors. So, very much after the fact, the story became that we named our city in honor of the Queen.

Now Charleston may have the earthquake and the start of the "War of Northern Aggression," but they don't have Charlotte's Place.

There is a lot of interesting history surrounding our fair city, unfortunately you have to go to the Charlotte Museum or the Museum of the New South to see it. Aren't you glad we have all those lovely glass refrigerator boxes downtown instead of messy historical buildings?

Now, I will say that I'm loving what is happening downtown (er.. I'm supposed to say "uptown") now that more people are living there. One thing about Charlotte that I love is how things continue to grow and change.

Culture, now that's another post entirely...

Come on down, Raul! You'll love it!

Ok, now I am ashamed.

Kallan, I just learned on the Food Channel that Chicago is the "Twinkie Capital of the World."

I bow to your culture and history.

Well, considering that your historic architecture consisted of a brothel and general store, yes, I'll take the marvelous, world class, glass boxes.

In my opinion, Charlotte's contemporary history is far more valuable than the history of its origin. In fact, Raul, its history is CURRENTLY being written and YOU need to be a part of it!

Yeah, you can still get screwed in the glass boxes, but it ain't nearly as much fun.

Sorry I would have replied sooner but I was eating a Twinkie.

Charlotte has culture you just have to find it. But better yet, just catch a flight to Chicago if you're in the mood for a museum, play, snow, or Twinkie!

... I agree..

I always thought that the "Queen" was "Charlotte"... my question is, who was "Sharon?"...I just assumed the king was a player and Sharon had it on the down low....no?"

Raul we would love to have you ...I've been here with my family for 5 yrs and we love it..

Raul...I would miss having you in the eastern part of NC when I visit down there, but I think you should go where the best job opportunity is. Good luck, whatever you do!!

GET ER DONE!

I would say to follow sheila's advice on her area, or union county. SC wouldn't be bad, but you'd spend about 20-30 min getting to southpark from I-77.

If you want more home, come to SC, if you want more convienience, Stallings/Mint Hill.

You would always be welcome in the Charlotte area.

You would love it here.

And where else would you move where you would have so many friends

If you're ever down here looking around, give me a shout, & I'll help you around the SC areas.

JUST DO IT

Hey Airgate. I am glad to see you are doing well. I hope you don't think I am following you, I want to move there around 4 years after working for Lowe's Home Improvement (Currently still in school, trying to get into Coporate Office). My goal is to work for the Information Security for Bank of America.

But from my experinces of Charlotte, it's a fun city. Of course the traffic can get bad at times, but that's almost every large city. My friends and I head down there sometimes to get away from Winston-Salem, and I fell in love with the queen city. There are so many things to do there, and you are not that far from other places like GA, FL, and other NC cities. The night life fun, but I am retired from that... hopefully you are too
