Legality of a 3rd brake light?
I was looking into getting a Motorklasse lip spoiler at some point and that replaces the 3rd brake light, so I was wondering what sort of lega/inspection issues that would pose.

A lot of cars built until the very early '90s didn't have a 3rd brake light, for example my dad's 1991 Ford Aerostar XL. DOT laws now probably requires manufacturers to have a 3rd brake light, but I never had a problem driving with out a 3rd brake light. Your mileage may vary though.

Apparently if you live in SC where I do, you don't need ANY F*%king lights. Oh, and if you are an illegal with no license or insurance, then great, bring it on.
Seriously, if I rearended someone that didn't have a working 3rd brake lamp, I would try to beat it in court (and I am pretty sure I could easily)
Basically you are only INCREASING the potential to be rearended and subsequent liability, probably by someone not paying attention. You know how no-one seems to pay attention on the highway these days.
I would not risk it, but then again, I'm not in my 20s anymore.

As for it being legal... I'm positive it is.
As for it being safe...
It really wouldn't make a difference as long as your brake lights in your tails are working properly. Think about it... If someone rear-ends you then it's their fault anyways If they want to argue, after the cop gets there, show the cop your taillights.

Any car manufactured after 1986 are required to have a high mount third brake light. Not sure when it became a requirement for trucks but I am willing to bet that if you got rear ended and didn't have one, you'd probably lose in court. I'm not a lawyer, just my opinion.
