Wow! The pictures are amazing! Costa Rica is definitely one of the places we want to visit in the near future. Did you see many monkeys? (I hate monkeys!)

If you get a chance, I'd love to see a day-by-day listing of your itinerary (where you went, where you stayed, etc.) I'd love to file it under "next vacation". Ron and I don't like tours, so it would be cool to have some first-hand recommendations of a route, etc. Looks like you had a great time.

Smccoy,

The only place I really saw Monkeys up close where in Manuel Antonio Nancional Park.

As for our Itenary:

We flew into Liiberia on Day 1 and drove from Liberia to Montana De Fuego Resort. This is about 5 kms from La Fortuna. As I have stated, that is one hell of a rough drive.

We stayed at Montana De Fuego for two nights and visited the following:

We visited La Fortuna
We drove to the Arenal National Park (2400 colones entrace fee a person which is about 6 dollars)
Hiked up to close to the Volcano
Drove up to the Arenal Observatory which literally takes you halfway up the Volcano and is a bitch of a drive on dirt/mud/volcanic rock, etc.
We mainly sat and watched the Volcano from the Montana de Fuego for most of the first few days

Day 3 we drove from the Montana De Fuego Resort to the Marriot Los Suenos just a few kilometers north of Jaco.
We did a lot of swimming in the pool, the playa de herradura beach and playa hermosa beach down the road
Day 4 We went to Manuel Antonio Park and hiked to the top of the mountain in the jungle and then hiked back down to some secluded beaches. We saw sloths, iquanas, white-faced monkeys, as well as many other assorted wildlife
Later on day 4 we went to the Rainmaker Preserver and went for a 4 km river/canopy hike. This is where we saw the eyelash vipers, giant millipides, beautiful waterfalls, and the rivers.
Day 5: We went up to the Villa Caletas resort North of Los Suenos which is a beautiful resort on top of the mountain. We met with a man who we had met last time who was selling properties overlooking the jungle and pacific from the top of the mountain. I wish I could afford to buy one of the lots.
We later went down to a bridge that is popular for seeing Crocodiles and has street vendors where you can get much better deals on cuban cigars and gifts than any of the gift shops in Costa Rica.
Day 6: We went to Turubari which is a big park. You ride the gonala over the rainforest to get to it and then they take you on a guided tour. This has the butterfly farms, dry forest hike, and assorted other tours. They even have one of those mazes made out of trees which is a pain in the ass IMO.
We spent the evening back at Playa de Hermosa watching the 10 - 15 ft waves. I tried to go in but the undercurrent was so strong that evening that just up to my ankles the water would pull me down. I decided it would be safer just to watch the waves.
Day 7: Drove to San Jose from Jaco and turned in the rental car and went to the airport.
