while auto-x is fun and all, I'd rather be on a track

Yes. They have a dedicated run group for novices.

At these events you are paired with an instructor that will ride along with you as you drive; most HPDEs also include classroom sessions as well to teach some of the fundamentals.

careful...be sure your car meets the required safety standards. Read the rules before ponying up the entry fee. Usually open-top cars require a non-OEM roll bar or cage of specific dimension, but is dependent on the group putting on the event and the site itself. If in doubt, call the club or track to verify.

I have got an email out to Stephen Westerfield about that very subject. CMP is flat, and the last HPDE I went to there they did not require a roll bar, just a Snell SA rated helmet.

EDIT: Just got off the phone with him

1) Yes, roll bar AND arm restraints are required
2) 2 events or less w/ THSCC and no comp. license = qualified novice, so you can get in for $250 for both days w/ instructor

See section 5.3 http://thscc.com/timetrial/nonhtml/Tech_Guide.pdf

Please note that this is THSCC specific and clubs like CRMC and HOD do not require this.

$460 -2 days w/ instructor
