The Vanagon was the start of the VW dealer arrogance in refusing warranty work, and the Passat was a nightmare. One of my coworkers had an '01 Passat V6 and her repair bills are certainly funding someone's 401-k.

I would never, ever, ever agian purchase a VW. I do not understand how a car company with such an arrogant attitude stays in business.

I feel much better now . . . Don't take any of this personally --
Sounds like you had a dealer problem and I specifically mentioned any 1.8T as being a POS. I am talking solely about the TDI. Never once has there been an issue with these motors. Keep in mind the TDI is their bread and butter in Europe. In VW's defense the 2.5L inline five they currently use, while not overwhelming in the power department, is a decent power plant. VW has come a long way recently...

I'm not talking about the motor, although that had its issues. It was the windows, A/C. radio antenna, water leaks, and the arrogant dealers -- that was the POS part.

I hope VW has come a long way, b/c the car was great to drive.

yikes. Yeah that sucks. Well, having spent plenty of time with newer VWs and a lot of time behind the wheel of an 06 Jetta TDI 5 spd I feel that their problems are truly behind them.

I started getting into the import scene in 96 and I am here to tell you I have seen my fair share of busted VWs. They have definitely had their problems, I am the first to admit that.

The company really didn't start getting their crap right until 03 or so were they really overhauled everything...

Being a big diesel fan I have always loved the TDIs and who can't love being able to break 50mpg on the hwy?

I'd do it. My Dad has a TDI Passat now for must be 4 years and not one problem. In fact, he's intending on purchasing the TDI Jetta Wagon. By the looks of that picture I'd have to support they buy.
