Hands down I would go with an VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI:

Sporty, 40+ MPG, haul all sorts of stuff, and freakin good looking...

The past versions of the TDI have been well known for going 400,000+ miles without rebuild. I don't see any reason why the newer version won't follow the same trend. In the mid 90s some VWs had bad transmission problems and the 1.8T was not the most reliable power plant and this is where most of this stigma stems from. The TDIs have always been highly praised and the current VW DSG transmission is very well liked to the point of winning various industry awards.

I stand by my pick. Ask any TDI owner and they will tell you the same thing. Get a TDI and don't look back.

I'm also a fan of the Mazda 3 -- especially the wagon/hatchback. Great little cars.
Gotta go check them out . . .

If your company is partnered up with Ford for S-plan discounts, you could buy a Mazda 3 for around invoice price.

I was about to recommend a GTI, but I remembered that you didn't have favorable experiences with VW.

The Fit Is GO! My +1 had one and recently traded it for a Element. She misses her Fit!
