the roadster gets generally gets a bad name for not handling very well.
most folk seem to think the the version of the car to have is the coupe version. i'm actually thinking of having one as my next car. only problem is it means buying an older car than i currently have with the S. and paying more than my S is worth!
both the roadster and the coupe shared the same trwo engines in the UK. the S50 and the S54 engines. S50 was 98>00 and S54 was 01>02 iirc. the S54 is the one to go for as the earlier engine had some troubles that can be costly.
the 01>02 cars also had DSC fitted as standard (definitely the coupe not actually sure about the roadster but i'd assume it did too).
hope that helps

S54 can also have some costly problems. S50 isn't quite so delicate as is made out. S50 is ok if you do your homework and the car has a warranty.
S50 will be significantly cheaper - performance the same.
DSC is a bit crap from what I've heard - a bit clumsy. A sensitive right foot does the trick and makes it more fun when you want it to be
The Roadster just needs a bit more bracing - rear mainly and it'll be fine. However, the coupe looks way better IMO.
Whichever you buy, Roadster or Coupe, budget

i've got nothing against the S50 - yours looked like a fine example

It's a nearly car, I'm afraid. It's like a Z3, but it's the M version, you know, the one with the engine from the M3, but it's not an M3 it's a roadster. But it's not a Z3. Geddit?

Its an awesome car.
My son bought one a month or so , got an 02 with 20k on the clock .
I cant believe the ride quality or the pulling power of it, plus it has the mean looks to match .
Insurance is sensible too , an M3 would be a grand dearer than the coupe .
I see you have an S2000 now , you will wonder wtf is going on when you gas the beemer
