why did you sell the S, if you're looking for a car that costs a similar amount and similar insurance? surely you could just save money on fuel by being light with your right foot?
probably too late to present these arguments to you, but i'm curious, specially as you say its a short term thing - could you not have made it work?
in response to your topic request (and to not be totally OT!) - Alfa 147 - the diesel is quick and economical... but it is an alfa, so buy wisely! if poss you want a good warranty.

we bought a Golf GTD recently, i dont know what would be in your price range as we bought an 08 but it's a corker if you're going to do the miles, good handling, nice inside and 45mpg avg...
plus the torque has a novelty value coming from the S

I am looking for something cheaper to insure but as I mentioned in my OP the Type R is more than the S to insure which baffled me as well as the Fiesta ST.
Paying £2000 for driving the car 8 times in a month and that only to work and back is pointless.
Of course it could have worked but it would have been pointless IMO especially as I am a student and if I'm paying so much why not reap the reward of actually driving the car ?

Thinking laterally, are there no other options than a car?
8 times a month drive to work now with insurance + tax is about £20 each trip I could understand this could be the price to pay for having something like the S available for fun and leisure use, but if you are now purely looking for occasional transport as a poor student ...
how about a Vespa?

I'm in my final year now.
I got the S at the beginning of my second year and used it to drive 250 miles a week.
I'm using my old Fiesta Zetec S for now.
£500 insurance and 30mpg+.
I'll see what crops up in the meantime.
If nothing does I'll just buy another S come July 2012.
