M1bjr, she's a petrolhead and would punch me if I suggested a cappuccino or beetle.

And we had a Saab once.....never again.

Mx5 too - has to be a Mk1 though, it's by far the better looking

http://www.goodwoodsportscars.co.uk/ for example ....

Mk1 Golf Clipper?

Pug 205 Cti?

Fiat Barchetta?

Nice website, UF!

The MK1 is the nicest, by far.

And easily personalised.

Decapitated saloons are a PoS, though. Avoid.

Kids are very discerning and instinctively and immediately know what's cool.

None of the stuff suggested has anything like the wow factor of the S.

Even the old Alfa spider (as in The Graduate) won't appeal as much.

I think you will just have to let her borrow it more often Gary.

Every sunny day from now on, in fact!

+1 for the MX5.

The Mk1s are the best, and the cheapest.

Mk2s are a little more 'pretty' IYKWIM, but a bit more expensive, and much heavier than say a '93 MK1.

If you decide to go for one, I'll happily provide some shopping advice as I used to own one, and have worked for an MX5 specialist

if the car will be driven by a female most of the time - MX5 every time

ask yourself how often you will want to drive it

any 'real' classic will require regualr tinkering/repairs and won't cope with living outside in all weathers

something not mentioned - I quite like these:
