Default Tyres for the Subaru

Mrs P has managed to go through a set of tyres on the Legacy in 17K miles, so replacement of the OEM RE50s is required.

Ideally I'd like to fit some M&S or open-block tread pattern tyres which would be suitable for year-round use.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

the best performance/value tyre I have found in recent years is the Falken FK452

however, not sure this is a Marks and Spencer tyre or 'open-block

Indeed - the Falkens with be on par with the OEM RE 50s I suspect.

I'm prepared to sacrifice refinement (road noise) and some dry grip for a tyre biased towards better inclement weather performance.

I have just replaced the Legacy tyres.

I went for the Kumho Ectsa's.

A reasonable tyre and the same type are on my M5.

The sidewalls are not as strong as, say, a Pilot Sport, but more than adequate for the cars usage.

£400 IIRC from Event Mobile.

We found no problem with the RE050s on the Legacy even down our drive in the snow last winter.
The car also pulled the sheep trailer out of the field before we got the Land Rover.

You've driven down our track, imagine it in snow, do you need something to cope with worse than that?

(Also dealt with a drive to Brum in the pouring rain this morning with no aquaplaning, I think the weight makes up for the relatively closed tyre design).

EDIT - 17k? What's she doing, autotesting?

We live at the bottom of a hill with no 'run-up'. When it snows or is icy, there can be problems, especially as the road is never gritted

As for 17K miles - who knows what the hell goes on! The drive to work for her is 12 miles of good twisty rural stuff and her economy in the diesel Legacy us under 43 - it takes some doing to get it that low.

It's a very flattering car to drive quickly (very?) and that is the likely cause.

This is what happened to my pride and joy in her hands a little while ago...
