I think the only people who really buy a proper sports car 100% for the label are very very rich people, most and wants to powerslide everywhere, long others do their research and buy the best they can.
A car can look good, have the 'right' badge, get good reviews and be good to drive, but that last quality is the least important.
Cars are often fashion statements, same as clothes. Simple as that imo.

This is what Clarkson was accusing Porsche of with the chart showing how the Cayman falls into the middle ground between Boxster and 911 - it's built down to a price, they could make it more powerful, they could put a LSD in it, but they don't because it would be faster than the 911 in benchmark tests and people wouldn't aspire to the (more expensive) 911 (and they'd risk alienating existing 911 owners, who no longer had the better car), the Cayman is a car looking for a market segment, not the best Porsche could do with the technology.

Although........ the possers and badge snobs out there will still buy the 911 BECAUSE it is the more expensive car, they won't care about the actual drive or performance advantage of the less expensive Cayman.
911 turbo versus Cayman - no contest imo
For many people, the looks count for a lot
Look at that new Impreza - however good a driving tool it may be, I don't want one
The ultimate driving experience simply isn't that important to me
Nor is it to most people (how many people track their cars?)
Something the car manufacturers realised long ago

I brought my first s2000 in september 2000 and at the time i had rejected a fiat 20v turbo so I had my deposit in my hand and went searching for a new car. i could remember seeing VBH driving one on top gear about a year prior and thought it looked fantastic but the stats never really tickled me. I went for a drive in one but was really unimpresed with it. It was a black one and they look small. I was not going to bother with one but they had just come down from 28k to 25995. and the residuals hp companies offered were very good. Anyway the top and bottom of it was that I liked the look of it but thought it was slow (I was used to turbo cars and did not really understand the vtec thing). I had read some reports that were not very complimentary.
So I actually brought the s2000 because I liked the look of it. Two years later I got another because I enjoyed the first one so much.

Gaffi,
I've just sold a 911 so I'm in a different boat to you regarding the Cayman vs. Turbo, been there, done that. Why all the hostilely towards Evo, is because they slagged off the S2000. If it is your vitriol is misplaced. In the ECoty test a few years ago the NSX-R won that year and there didn

Fair enough, but every Ferrari I've driven was pretty rubbish, the 360 rode like it was on an after market suspension kit and the earlier 355 felt like I was driving a fiat with the shit driving position. I'm not that impressed with them, thought I'd love
