Today I leased...

I think as a lasting remark on the thing (you'll be all glad to hear!), VW have dared to design an oil burner that you CAN have fun in. Sure, it misses the mark in high revving shenanigans, and heart stopping hedge moments of understeer. The chaps on Mk7 site that have remapped these conclude they eat the GTI for brekky.
However, if it was a samey monthly payment, I'd be in the GTi or R

the GTi can also be remapped if you want to play that game and gets much better results i believe, indeed these are readily mapped to make them quicker than the R (assuming you are happy with the risk of lunched motors i guess) because they are just fwd so are quite a bit lighter
my view is you have a fun almost hot hatch with class leading interior, great dynamics, a sound image and very good residuals (you dont give a sh*t about that but it probably helps that great deal you got). Also ime they are pretty bulletproof and the later diesels offer petrol esque refinement if not rev range
your final comment makes sense, given your choice i would also have got the 180 D and one of those stealthy bluefin remaps

The gttdi I had was a good mix of comfort with reasonable speed. It was mapped to 170. I couldn't evangelise about its speed or performance in the same breath as an r, but I wouldn't do that. The same with every other VW/Audi diesel I have had. They are good, solid cars but they are not quick in petrol acceleration sense.

Moving away from the brilliant GTD though...
Looking at the R deals currently - they are enticing, to say the least.
£213.76 inc vat a month, if you cough up a mere £2565 upfront and stick it on a 5,000 per annum personal lease.
£257.99 inc vat a month, if you cough up £1547 upfront. Gets closer to £300 a month at £800 upfront.
I saw the new Type R today pass me by on the motorway. Hideous thing, it's a complete embarrassment of a thing. Perhaps it will grow on me. But like the '86, perhaps it won't. I'm really not liking what's coming out of Japan at the moment - some of their best cars look "rushed".

I like the 86 lookswise a lot
The motor puts me off but a few reviews of supercharged versions have been unconvincing too

I think the '86 will only ever erupt into a superb value car, when it's worth half its money. It kind of reminds me of the S14; gawdy but sublime handling. Addictively so.
I guess it only ever will be a Jap phenomenon

If i were buying i would look but i think the motor would be my issue, certainly not looks

I am on 287 a month with 561 down, which included the first month, so sort of a 274 deposit. (3+23)
It was a stonking deal at the time. They were £400+ on lings a few months ago.
Agree, the new Type R is hideous. I just can't see the market for it, not that many true enthusiasts and not many punks with that sort of money. It's just miles away from other finance options available on it's competitors.
Sure, lots seem to hate the Golf, which is a bit weird as not much to hate. Not a great deal to love as it's very 'good' but not exciting, but value is what is selling them, which it seems the Civic is just not in the same market.

Is that on a 2 or 3 year deal?
