I guess some weight is essential if a 'quality sound' is to be engineered into the premium tell-tale of shutting the vehicle's doors; my Insight and Prius make 'Kling' and 'Klang' sounds respectively...
To a certain extent, yes. However door sounds are usually controlled by simple tuning measures.

The Japanese prefer medium-pitched sounds (which is why Eastern music sounds so awful to us westerners) and thy japanese exhausts tend to sound so bland and whiney.

Shat 'car' for 4x4 eejits imo
The 4WD with rheomagnetic suspension & everything probably is. It's a lot for a pair of shiney shoes for the wifey to totter around in.

It also means she's gotta drive a lot slower past schools (if the propoganda is to be believed) than the MINImum.

To a point, I'd agree. But the laws of physics can't be avoided; there's no way an Alcan foil baking tray will ever sound like an oak cathedral door.

I was being metaphorical, but coincidentally for the interior options for the Evoque, in the section 'Interior Finishers' there is a 'Grey Oak' trim option...

Well, it looks like it's bending over.

But the back light appears rather a small opening.
