Default Tax and MOT out of sync on a one owner car

The MOT is due by December 31st (car is a 57 plate) but the tax runs out March 31st.

I thought tax and MOT dates should coincide or be 6 months apart.

Seller says the dealer had it a few months.

Is it that simple?

sounds fair to me....

Imagine it was all due to expired in June.... Car is traded in during November. Dealer sells the tax disc, car is bought in January and given 12 months tax but MOT isn't updated.

I would have had the exact same if I didnt get the MOT done as part of the deal of buying my s2000. Good job as it resulted in me getting a new front brake caliper !

Every car I have traded in - I have gotten the tax disc back - and refunded.

The MOT date is fixed.

When a car is taxed is not.

I've owned a hell of a lot of cars and I don't think I've ever had the MOT and tax in sync.

A combination of things like forgetting the MOT (much easier than forgetting the tax) and cars coming on and off SORN can soon put the due dates and actual dates all over the place.

@ conanius: yes, good point. Forgot to say, the car is advertised as single owner. From new (implied). In which case there can't be any dealer ownership except when newly delivered fresh from Honda.

So, taxed by the dealer December. Sold to the punter in March.

I guess the buyer said 'I want a year tax'?

And the MOT ran from December?

Dealer registers the car against themselves classing it as a sale to keep quota's up but car doesn't actually go anywhere. Does mean the clock is ticking regarding warranty/MOT but since the car is off the road it isn't taxed

Mot is based on date of first registration not date of sale.
Like ninja said lots of dealers will pre-register the car to make quotas or to have it ready for a quick sale or to use as their own run-around or demo car.
When someone buys it they re-tax it for 12 months.
(Or, I’m not sure about this, they might be able to drive it without Tax on trade plates)
