Speeding points Being removed from license
I have 6 points on my license for speeding, from 10/2002.
According to the DVLA website I can get these removed from my license in the next couple of weeks, as it will have been 4 years.
Thats all good
BUT! When you are getting insurance quotes, they always ask if you have had any points in the last 5 years but as far as I can see they can only really ask for the last 4 years as if they try and check up they will see I have no points on my license!
I know if I declare I've had no points that in effect I'm lying and it could invalidate my policy but I don't see how they can prove it if theres no points on my license? Why should they be able to charge me more for a 5th year when I have no points??
I think it will make about

How the law treats points and how insurers treat points are two entirely separate issues.
The latter is an actuarial calculation and presumably they draw inferences from the number of points over a 5 year period as to the likelihood that you will have an accident.
I don't know either how an insurer would find out if you had had points that weren't on your licence. But I don't think I'd be prepared to run the risk of them being able to do so, and so voiding my cover by not declaring them and taking that chance.

What LL is saying is perfectly true, but slightly misses the point(s):
I presume insurance companies must have a direct line to the DVLA d-base, so they can check these things.
Then go, "aha, caught you fibbing, you're so f ucked, me old beauty!"
The points only stay on your licence for three years. But, as you say, the points actually stay ON your licence for four.
Now what S.172 of the Human Rights act/self-incrimination has to do with that, I dunno.
I understand that's why you should never carry it with you.

I've had this before.
Q: How many points over the last 5 years?
A: 12 in total?
Q: What? That means you are banned?
A: If they where all at the same time yes?
Q: But my system doesn't allow for 12 points
A: What would you like me to do? Pick a number of less than 12 or give the number I have now?
Q: errrrr
A: I've got six now does that help?
I've always explained it every year since and they give me a quote. It does help that the policy I have does not increase the premium for minor speed violations
