Default Small cheap 4x4

My 19 year old niece needs a small 4x4 , around 2k and needs to be the lowest insurance group poss ( she has never had insurance... ) was thinking along the lines of a 'jimmy' but i dont know anything about them... a freelander is to expensive to insure - so any others to look at (and yes needs to be a 4x4)

Jimmy is small and tinny like the sj413 they replaced! Cheap as hell to run, the next thing would be a Rav4 2dr, they are reasonably cheap and built a lot better.
The other thing would be a suzuki vitara jlx, a bit old now, but still 4x4 and cheap.

You could probably find a Short Wheel Base Landrover defender for that money.
It'll probably be a bit battered, but you can get good insurance with landrover clubs and there's a good community if she wants to get involved.
Also relatively easy to fix as they tend to be more nuts and bolts than electrickery.

Otherwise Vitaras are cheap now, and not that bad for 2k.
2 door frontera might do the job.
Jeep Wrangler.

Does she want it to be a softtop?

You can get a Surf for 2k, but probably not cheap on insurance, or small.
Same for and older Range Rover or other things like that.

oh im a landrover fan... disco of 6 years ! but freelander would be to pricy and defender is to agricultural, discovery is to ' big ' and insurance is far to high for her.. rav4 may be an idea but thought they wernt 4 wheel drive ?

Fiat Panda 4x4?

What's the reasoning for a 4x4 in particular? Towing?

My wife has a Shogun Pinin
Well built, super reliable and far more cost effective than a RAV4
She actually wanted a RAV4 to start with but decided the Pinin was a better drive.
