Default Road marking - WTF is this ? nearly killed someone

These have 'sprung up' all over town.. last night it was late i was approaching one of these odd bits of read road.. i always ' stop ' but as it was clear i was pulling on to it - WIZ out of nowhere someone on a bike shot out in front of me.. i missed him by about 3 inches.. he was prob doing 15-2o mph on his bike with no intention of stopping... mad mad mad and this morning on my way out someone just started to walk out in front of me when i was approaching.. im sure they are not pedestrian crossings so they don't have right of way... but the idea of bikes just ignoring the fact traffic is coming and shoot over them is very worrying ! so give way or not give way !

By the looks of it, it's a bike crossing and the dotted white line would indeed indicate you have to give way.

More and more "random" style road markings are appearing that make it less clear. They need to remove a lot of road clutter.

Someone proposed removing ALL road markings and signs. Makes everyone much more wary when driving which would be a good thing.

If it was in America I'd say it was a 4 way stop between the bikes and cars.

In theory it's a nice way of showing everyone that bikes and pedestrians want to cross here and asking everyone to watch out for each other.

In practive we'll just see people cutting in front of each other and bitching about who had right of way.

I wasn't sure on those, they might have been burned over ?

Need a closer image, however, the highway code states you must give way to cyclists anyway so they still would have priority, even if not, they would be given priority as they are also coming from the right at a roundabout.

Some of the ones round here have the Give Way symbol on the pavement for the cyclists so they don't just dash out but not all of them for reason.

It's a continuation of the cycle path however it should be marked as to whether or they are Give Way for the cyclist or the car otherwise someone is going to come a cropper.

yup thats my point - its not done in a way to show who has way.. thus as Rob88 says its supposed to be there so everyone watches out for each other.. .like that works !

I'm a very big fan of the US/Canadian way of having 3-way or 4-way stops.

For those that aren't familiar with it, you come to a complete stop at the sign and the first person to get there goes first.
If there are many cars queuing then one car is let out at a time in a clockwise order.
If someone is turning oposite you then you can jump the queue to get past so long as you don't obstruct anyone.

It seems strange, but it works very well, nobody is help up for too long.
As you HAVE to stop at the stop sign then it's easy to let pedestrians cross.
And, it prevents those stupid times where you wait at a red light even though there is no other traffic.
