Restore/Refurbish a Motorbike
Just been watching bits of "A Bike Is Born" this afternoon and it got me thinking I might like to do something like this (not to make a profit, just for the enjoyment of resurrecting something). Was thinking something like a Suzuki GSXR 400R or Honda CBR 400 RR, i.e. something from the late 80's or early 90's. Anyone know where to go looking for a "project" type bike, other than Autotrader?
Thanks,
Dave.

If you do have a go at something post some pics up

MCN and Exchange and Mart may yield some results too. It may be worth ringing around a few dealers to see if they have any PX stuff to clear too.
I did a GPz 750 a good frew years ago, I really enjoyed the experience, as projects go, they take up less space and should cost a little less to do also

I had an RVF400 which was an awesome bike too! Look on specialist forums such as 400 greybike as bikes such as those often appear in the for sale section.
The only thing to consider is spare parts availability, when I had mine certain parts were becoming hard to source and as time goes on I doubt they are getting an easier to find!

broadly speaking, the car/bike in pieces, takes up twice the space it occupies complete

As long as the intention is to lose a bucket of cash, no problem.
The only other thing is, we quickly forget just how badly bikes from the 70's and 80's handled and stopped.
EBay and look for badly listed items or other bike forums and stick up wanted ads. You'll be amazed at what sits in peoples sheds.
Go for something like a TDR250 and you can have a laugh on it too. Go for a stroker with fewer moving parts.

I was looking at the old air cooled Yamaha RD250 and RD400 yesterday afternoon. Always wanted one of them when I was a kid (I did have an RD350LC briefly). There seems to be a fairly lively "scene" around the Yamaha two stroke bikes of the 70's and 80's. Would love to do one with single seat, racing tank, full fairing etc etc.

I havent seen an RG500 or NSR400 in years. Would be great to bring back a two stroke screamer.
