I can usually buy oil at around 50%-75% of retail and filters for about 50% but it still comes to something like £35-£40 on the Jag and then you've still got the time to give to the job and disposal to factor in. I'd suggest neither of us has anything like the buying power of a national chain and there's bound to be a bit of loss leader in there. Having said that, I've never had the "your shocks/discs/tyres/cats are shagged" line. As you probably know, I'm not about skimping on my cars but the cost+convenience is so impressive I think it's mad not to take advantage. Last time I did an oil change I made a right mess of the garage floor!!! Would I get National to change discs or shocks - no - but there are many things that main dealers have coined it with for years and where I'd happily use a chain. Kwik fit for air con being a good example. Unsurprisingly, many main dealer prices have come down in response to this but they know the value of a stamp.

Perhaps there are more home DIYers like myself, that they are trying to allure back. I admit, it's cheap.
I've got an oil change due in 4,000miles time on the Golf - i'll give them a bell and ask the question. My requirements are Castrol Edge fully synth, not Longlife. Then i'll honestly post the cost with the oil filter (OEM filters are about a fiver on ECP anyway).
I have at times used my extractor to change the oil, but not every time (otherwise you never rid all the crap out via suction). This method is a 10 minute job, start to finish with no mess.
