The new Polo GTi fell a fair distance from its bigger brother, despite the similar looks, in an EVO review a couple of months ago. Shame as it looked good on paper.

From what I've heard though I shouldn't really trust things that Evo say...

Why did it fall short?

The 1.8t (150bhp) is tried and tested, and easily remappable to 190-odd bhp, and you can spec it up quite well to make it quite luxurious for a little car.
the 1.8T lump and its ancilleries was one of the most recalled & repaired engines VW ever had.

However I think they ironed out all the problems by 2005, but then changed to a 2.0 engine....

A simple re-amp of the latest 1.8T in a Golf version will get you 185 BHP & 200+ lb/ft, but the torque levels are down on the 150 Polo (148 std lb/ft) engine compared to the same MKiv Golf, I think there was more than one reason for this, perhaps not to ursurp the last Golfs, or more likely the Polo Chassis would be compromised after a re-map?

I'd check some tuners first and see what they reckon.

Start to spec high enough and

PM details of the BMW when you get a part-ex price.

Yeah I've had quite a few 1.8t's over the years and on the whole mine have been OK (had 150, 210 and 225 bhp variants) aside from the coil packs and .. erm.. that's all I can remember!

I'm in 2 minds whether to part-ex or sell the BMW privately - if it's going to go privately it may well go up for sale sooner rather than later so I can pay off the HP and get it out of the way

You were lucky none of your cars had the DV blow. I went through about 3 on one car. And it wasn't chipped or modded in any way.

Ah yes I did have quite a few DVs go - I ended up putting an aftermarket one on my S3

(Blimey - forgot about them)
