Paying as little tax as possible.....
Hi All
My tax is up at the end of the month, so as usual I can either pay 6 months or 12 months.
The critical part is this:

The new tax bands kick in April 1st - so if I go for 6 months now, in May Ill have to re tax at

Given that 12 months (per month) is cheaper, buy 12 months and cancel/sorn that come feb/march.
I'll not do this, there's too much risk IMO of the DVLA getting it wrong as they'll be swamped with people doing this. Then you may have to live with your car SORN'd for longer than you'd like.

I'm confused about this too, mine is a 2001 Y (so just to new to stay on the old tax bands I think). I was going to sorn mid/late feb and buy 12 months in March? Is this the right time frame?
As far as I understand it the only issue here is the possibility that if you sorn in feb, have the car off the road for a week, that you will not be allowed to re tax from March 1st.
I'm also not sure if it has to be March first, or whether April 1st is possible, as the budget was in mid april and it's supposed to apply based on the date given in the budget..
Long story short, has anyone read all the info and worked out the most efficient and fool proof way to do this without being caught out?

As said before, I'd be concerned that you could be weeks without a tax disc.
you may "time" it right but he DVLA will be inundated with people doing this, they will then take a lot longer to process all the applications.
You phone them up and they say (if you get through) "sorry, we're very busy with lots of people doing this, it'll be another 2/3 weeks before we get to yours". And if it takes them an extra week or two, you may then end up in April tax bands!!!!
So you might save yourself, what

I recall when I SORNd mine that I renewed at my local village post office a few hundred yards away with MOT, insurance plus of course a cheque
IIRC the only slight bummer was losing a few days because I didn't do it on the first of the month
This was years ago and, if I were you, I would check at my nearest post office!
Me? Vehicle first registered October 2000, so ...

Yes, I will SORN online, but given the scenario, will be re-taxing in my local post office...
I can live without it for a week or two, though I'd prefer April over March, weather that little bit better for the bike

I will simply go with the required forms to the post office, tax my car from the first of the month having sent mine current disc back to the dvla for refund the night before. This I did many times when selling cars off the forecourt to people who wanted a deal with a full 6/12 months tax rather than what was on the screen. no problem
