While it's worse in France, it's not even double, 4,275 vs 2,538 in 2008, which is 1.68x for the geeks amongst you.

PS just to rub salt in, I got that link via Google and Wikipedia
To be fair, France has improved considerably in the past 10 years (47% reduction since 2000, compared to 25% here). All those 5 Star NCAP Renos along with the more stringent speed enforcement I guess.
Add in the generally higher standard of living here which means we got sfaer cars before the French, and the pride taken in our cars, and that certainly explains a bit of it.
