This thread is not about those people
A lot of women and retired people fit the profile you describe, and good luck to them

The thread was about the types of cars, and the justification for liking / buying them or not.
What is the f**king point of them. Cars that have the same body as the top of the range model, but have 1/10th of the performance. Why would you do that. As I just posted on the pistonheads news section, why can't we just have slow cars that look slow and fast looking ones that go fast. It keeps everyone honest. It puts an incentive on to people to get better jobs and work harder at school to get a better looking car.
I've never understood cars like the 306 Xsi, Golf Driver, Saxo West Coast, 120bhp A4 S-lines with the S4 bodykit, and now the Ford Focus that looks like an St but has 150bhp or something stupid.

But the same could be said of why is there a top of the range version of 'normal' cars. Such as the Saxo VTS, its a top of the range piece of french shite designed for women and old farts with no interest in cars.

And the types of cars mentioned are rather different from 'standard' Z4s, SL350s and the like
I think most people see 'the point' of those - and I think my demographic pretty much covers it
However, those cars do not share/ape the bodykits of their top of the food chain siblings
It is quite clear to me that people that choose 'M-sport' 2.0 BMWs (for example) DO have an interest in performance and/or image
And I agree with the central premise they are a bit sad

Here's the thing. Compare a 318i SE against a 318i M-Sport, and the differences are as follows:
SE has a leather steering wheel
M-Sport has 'sports seats' - whatever that means, probably more uncomfortable
M-Sport has anthracite headlining - whatever that is
M-Sport has sports suspension i.e. a crap ride
M-Sport has 17" alloys (SE has 16") i.e. an even crappier ride
M-Sport has low profile tyres (225/45 & 255/40 vs 205/55 & 205/55) yet more crappiness adeded to the ride
M-Sport has some alcantara in the upholstery - oooh
M-Sport has Door sills with M Badge - oooh
M-Sport has High-gloss Shadowline exterior trim - oooh
M-Sport has M Aerodynamic bodystyling - doesn't make it go any faster
M-Sport costs an extra

Why anyone should do so is a sound question but clearly BMW's marketing department have identified that there is a segment of the market who are prepared to do so.

A lot of women I know drive sporting versions of plain cars.
None of them drive fast though.
I had past and present girlfriends drive the Elise and the Honda,
they all were scared to give it some welly.
Some cars could be stepping stones for them, finances etc
Russ.
