Kids make mistakes. That kid did. Did he deserve the venom delivered by the cantankerous old twat? No.
Did he deserve a few strong words. Certainly.
There is a difference.

I agree, there are ways of talking to children of that age.
It was nowhere near his eye, I retracted my punch for that and instead delivered it later for racism
