I've seen a lot of marshalls standing in places they really should know better than to be. There are some who forget they're there to do a job and end up being a spectator/fan till they're required to do something.
That's not a reflection on this guy, just a general observation.

Generally marshals are stationed at specific points around a circuit as designated by people like the MSA. You can't wander too far from where you are told to be.
It's more difficult for flag marshals as one of the pair has to face the "wrong" way i.e. back to the traffic. If you are that marshal you are totally reliant of the other person marshaling with you to warn you of danger.
If you marshal for long enough you will have your own scary story to tell. I was once hit by the rear deck of a sports prototype that flew off of the car at high spped. I managed to push my companion out of the way and luckily took the impact on my shoulder.
It's why most circuits now have all the safety fencing to protect spectators - but you ask most marshals and they'd far rather be where they are doing what they do.

if it wasn't for the unpaid services of these guys/gals I wouldn't have been able to start racing. Racing is what it says on the tin everyone knows that when they sign up.

Condolences to the family, tough and dangerous job IMHO, I would not fancy doing it.
