The "auto box" fitted to either is the new DCT (duel clutch transmission) and totally different to the DSG, which is a manual gearbox operated electronically.

The model designation is right - DSG is volkswagen's dual clutch transmission which I believe is similar to BMW's duel clutch. Are you thinking about SMG which was the manual operating with hydraulics i think.

The semi-auto on the E46 is SMG (or SMG II), as described above by Chilled.

Very nice road car. More than adequate poke for A road use. Very relaxed high speed autobahn cruiser. It's pretty quiet at a steady 100.

Ride on the run flats on 19" wheels on uneven surfaces is not good.

But overall I'm very pleased with it.
