Agreed, but how do you explain his performances against Alonso last season ?
How would you feel if you drove for your dad's racing team, a group of people whom you have known for many years and built a rapport with? Ron has probably supported Hamilton for half his life and might as well be his father at times. I reckon you'd feel pretty special in that situation, and very quickly at home. This family of people will favour you, consciously or unconsciously over any team mate who may arrive. Especially if they are a double world chamption - why would they need as much support as a rookie?

But the fact is that F1 drivers all need constant support, as many of them didn't have a childhood like the rest of us. Most of it is spent in the back of an estate car going to races and learning about slipstreaming, whilst their mates are all out chasing birds, having fun, and getting into trouble. If you are surrounded by people encouraging you, supporting you, and helping you develop your skills, you are most likely going to perform better than someone in identical equipment who's given a set of overalls and told to get on with it.

Coupled with obvious natural talent, that was enough to compete at Alonso's level. Until he got his back up of course, which is when Alonso does some of his best (and worst) work.

He wasn't lucky. He tested the McLaren, along with Gary Paffit and Pedro de La Rosa, and Ron & co. made a decision on who was the best driver at their disposal, and it looks like they chose right. McLaren weren't stuck for choice; every driver (with the possible exception of Massa and Raikonnen) would have wanted that seat.

And McLaren weren't the dominant team. In case you've forgotten, Ferrari won both championships.
Hamilton was told mid-season in 2006 that he had the McLaren seat for '06. They went for tests, but this was irrelevant as Hamilton later declared he was told before the GP2 season had even ended that he had the race seat.

Ferrari were struggling with their daft long-wheelbase car, and McLaren were stuffing them at every track that had a few slow corners on it. McLaren then got all their points taken away for being naughty boys.

I would like to see just how good Mark Webber is in a dominant car because his lap of the Top Gear circuit in wet conditions was far more impressive than the lap by Lewis Hamilton.
'Top Gear' and 'Imperical Data'. Two quotes that have absolutely no relation to each other.

Just remember that the Stig managed a Liana lap in 1m 44 in the dry.

Lewis managed a lap of 1m 44 in the wet.

The stig has been round there hundreds if not thousands of times.

Lewis hasn't.

If you believe that Lewis actually did that time, you seriously need your reasoning skill checking.

T'was another media exercise to promote the talents of Lewis.

It still annoys me how much these Drivers get paid.

The engineers make more difference than the driver.

Hell, the pitstop boys can win you a race.

This is something Frank Williams always knew.

Shame he doesn't have the budget he deserves

I think some people need to be consistent.

By that, you mean me

He's not as good as Alonso imo because he doesn

Actually, Kubica is proving to be on a similar level right now, and with his consistency he maybe has the edge.
And is costing BMW 1/8 of what Hamilton is costing McLaren.

It's like buying a Mugen manifold when the Megan copy is just as good!

Loving it

Just fishing for sense in a sea full of sh1t, Paul!

But lets face it, compared to Hamilton, Kubica is a complete bargain!

Another case of the Poles undercutting the Brits and doing as good a job!

Indeed, however I won't give up on Hamilton just yet, I think he will prove to be worth every penny in the long run. To be honest with all the sponsorship and exposure he is probably worth a lot more to Macca than Kubca is to BMW regardless of results. Silverstone is already sold out this year for example.
