But the service in their restaurants is crap
Ah, but at least their (and probably everywhere else in mainland europe) restaurants are open more or less round the clock, rather than for a few hours or so as in the UK - where the service is still abysmal at least half of the time.

Australia is too far, so I think France is my next move if the natives don't get too uptight (read - petrol bombing in Brittany etc.)

Pleased to hear you had a good Holiday mate.

Anyone else think Mark looks like Rob Bryden in this photo?

I love Italy. The holiday we had last year south of Naples was in my top five I think.

Service is not quick in most places in Italy because they don't wolf down their meals. You sit down and a meal lasts hours, rather than minutes. It's an event, not just a chance to stuff your face which I guess is why groups of friends and families go out to eat, children are included and somehow don't feel the need to run round the restaurant or demand entertainment.

And as I posted before, I actually enjoyed driving there, even in Naples (supposed to be one of the worst places on earth for driving) - the Italians don't get aggressive with their driving, someone pulls out to overtake, even with a speed difference of 5mph and the other cars allow them through, no blocking, no 'self-policing' of other people, just courtesy and (I think) an expectation that round the corner there will be a Cinquecento on your side of the road overtaking V6 Alfa.
