Illegally Spaced Number Plates
For the first time in the 5 or so years that I have had the plates on my car I got stopped because of my plate.
Driving South on the A1 between Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City there was a police car parked on the hard shoulder. As I passed he pulled onto the road and I knew he was travelling pretty rapidly as he caught up with me as I pulled up at the junction.
Lights went on and I found a safe place to park. Police car had ANPR Equiped written across the bonnet so I knew why I had been stopped.
Guy was very polite and pleasant and told me that his equipment was unable to read my front plate and that it was too small, wrongly spaced, wrong font and wrong background. I said that I had never been stopped before as a result of the plate. He checked my licence out and then told me that there is a crack down on 'illegal' plates in the run up to the Olympics and his advice was that I should put legal plates on the car at least until after the Olympics.
Had a brief chat with him about the car, obviously a bit of a petrolhead.
So ... where abouts do I get plates made up these days? Something a little bit bigger with slightly better spacing.

Quick word, you will need proof of id and ownership of vehicle to get plates made now, driving licence and v5 are good, just so you know.

Will do you legal spaced correct font plates for peanuts - sure they aren't stamped with all the silly BS bollocks but as far as ANPR is concerned you won't stand out.

I have had cause to order (road-legal) plates on two separate occasions recently. I used online suppliers both times, neither required proof of ownership.
