Heavy sports cars

heavier cars can stop just as fast i believe because they have more traction
i think this is coming home to roost in the supercars now but it seems to be slowly filtering down to more mundane machinery, look at that focus RS, it weighs more than jo brand

plus everyone else thinks the driver is a twat.
They should also tax heavy sportscar drivers; what's the point of all that CF if old pie face can't stop stuffing his gob.
And heavy motorbikes - The next-gen Leadwing is rumoured to be bigger than a Scania R480.
And buses - why does a vehicle with two people on board need to be so big?
And trains - ditto.
Actually, only I should be allowed to use the road...

Less weight means less grip, so that cancels out (not really). However, in an accident the heavier your car is makes things better for you (and worse for the people in the other car). It's much safer for you and your passengers in a big heavy car than in a light plastic one.
Afterall, how many S's get stuffed every year due to "diesel" or "that hedge just jumped pout and hit the back of my S2000"?
But, lightweight means more acceleration for less power at low speed, but the faster you go, air resistance becomes a bigger and bigger factor. A 240bhp S2000 has a higher top speed than a 120bhp Elise, because weight doesn't matter and power and drag is everything for top speed.
And besides the S2000 Vmax is c. 150mph IIRC (and I await the exception to every rule)
And the S2 Elise 111r (note not the supercharged on) has a Vmax (according to Lotus) of 138
Therefore a 12mph difference
Better to ban un-aerodynamic cars, like Caterhams.[/QUOTE]

I used to quite easily see 40mpg from my old S1 elise so apart from the leaks, the noise, the hassle of getting in and out, the lack of space for anything bigger than a laptop bag, the fact you were in the eye line of most bus and truck exhausts and the bone crunching ride, it was the perfect commuter car.

I bet the Elise has more grip than an S2000 in all directions and the Caterham even more so I would imagine.

Was it on here or another forum where somebody picked up his brand new Elise from the factory in Norfolk and wrote it off on the roundabout on the way out?

He picked it up and was driving it straight to my house to show me and then I got a text to say he'd ploughed it into armco off a roundabout a mile from my house.
Total write off.

Ah but that's because there's more stupid people driving S2000s, not because of any issues over grip.

Chris, as I've recounted in the past, on an Andy Walsh day my S2000 and a TVR Griffith could both outbrake a 111S which a friend had brought along. Andy actually jumped in the Elise to try himself and still couldn't match the TVR or the S2000. He then went and brought over his own Elise. Still couldn't do it
Demonstrates the grip point

I think it says more about Elise/S2000/TVR brakes than the weight of the cars.
I'd like to see anything this side of £100k outbrake my Caterham and it's only not running anything fancy
