As I now cycle to work a couple of days a week, hearing is very important indeed, as I'm going a lot slower, so I need to know when a potential murderer is approaching from behind.

Made me chuckle LG.. motorcycle is also defensive but death approaches from the front usually.. if a car ever gets close to my azz I usually just **** off.. either through traffic or not
What people sometimes don't get is while a 400bhp turbo S2000 feels pretty fast my 120hp CBR did 0-100 in 6.2s, 1/4 in 10.5 at 130mph.. I don't need to go on
And that's not a patch on a litre bike with 200 ponies
There are a few cars which can keep up, a mad Tesla or a £300k Italian thing but an Audi S3 or Golf R? Feck off

@lovegroova I realise there is a big difference between cycling and (motor)biking.
The latter you straddle a big noise emitter also moving at the speed of normal traffic. SIght is key.
At cycling speeds noise and sounds give warning. (Those listening to music on ear buds Darwin will take care of).

Had a go on a CB1000R at the weekend
First impression is it's a nicely put together bike, not compared to a classic but a step up from my Yam. TFT display, traction control and a few gizmos, certainly more gadgetry than my current bike.
Screen is nice and clear but quite busy.
It's heavier than the XSR and you notice that shuffling it around. My first experience of a quick shifter.and I was in love with that from the off. Full bore upshifts are fine and smooth - it's as quick as a dual clutch or very close to ime
Engine is very tractable. It doesn't feel like it matches the twins torque but it never feels a problem like a 600 four does.
Blinding rapid, you are hanging on at 100% throttle, 0-100mph is 6s and it feels every bit that quick.
Engine is smooth and buzzy, electronic throttle and you can tell. Bah humbug.
Suspension was a huge step up on mine, upside down forks, composure was out of this world, single sided swingarm.

I'll throw a caveat at you .....
It's so quick that it ends up being dull. You can't rag on it in anything other than 1st or maybe 2nd without turning into a missile. Your current thing will be more fun more of the time.
That said, i'm in no rush to get rid of mine either - the big scooter feeling at town speeds in top gear is utterly relaxing.
Why not go full nutnut and get an S1000RR or a Hayabusa

The only thing i'd change mine for is something more upright, probably some kind of adventure thing but not for anything remotely adventurous. As nuts as it sounds, i'm considering another newer Z1000 - they are that good.

My view is that the big bikes are the sweet spot but with the drawbacks you mention
the XS being french assembled is ****ing average quality, the paint is dire..plus some things like a steel swingarm and cheap suspension annoy me. I would happily pay a premium for a better quality bike with the same engine, the CP2 is corking
The CB is a better quality bike, better suspension which is night and day noticeable even to a novice like me. The detuned fireblade motor is lovely and the box is top notch
Gut is that I will do it.. but next year after another winter in the slush. No rush..

The Kwak Z1000R is also pretty good, as is the Suzuki GSX-S1000. Honestly i don't think the fairing on the Z1000SX makes that much difference and having the built in pannier mounts is a boon for when you want them and for when you don't. It'd almost be worth taking the fairing off and 'De-Sxing' it at the front to make it a naked but with secure pannier as an option.
