the issue being you are on the same drugs as me..
the wiring in this thing has been butchered, it has an MOT but is far from MOT worthy. brake light doesnt work, headlight controls and horn do nothing. it appears to have some kind of piggy back road legalising loom half fitted. one brake switch has two really poor connections and lots of things arent plugged in. luckily its pretty simple and indicators are not needed.
i do need to employ my lad tho as being colour blind this wiring malarky is all a bit tedious

By the sounds, this did not deter the previous owner(s)!

funny you say that, a lot of red wires..heh. at least they look red to me
i figured out the brake light and kill switch. took a look at a 450RX today at Honda to compare. They reckones its not Honda who convert the R for road use, maybe Dave Thorpe, looked factory though to me so a decent job.
also saw the 450L, a sales flop. they hadnt sold one.

I read that as this years pre reg bargain.

if it had the US power (mid 40s) it would be perfect for my use irrespective of price
i had a 250M for commuting, it did 90mpg and was very comfy and tall enough to see over cars etc.. it just lacked enough grunt to use anywhere else. the 450RX needs a new piston after a couple of months so is out
the 450L has an additional 1bhp over the 250L. for about £5k.
ok, it has proper suspension and isnt chucked together in the B side factory, its a good bike held back by whatever they did to the motor.
so 450x and XSR for me. i will use the Honda in the worst weather to limit miles, the XSR probably doing 2.5k of my 3k ish mileage and me not minding if i drop the X..
in theory.. i keep ordering bits
ignition switch
seat
dog leg
rear hydraulic brake switch
wiring bits n bobs

I just don't have the time for fiddling with stuff. If it stays dry and salt free I might the Z out for a run - not really fazed by the cold.
Mind there was a nice VTR Firestorm in my mates garage with flat bars and a full Micron system for £1500 .....

haha this has been a learning experience.
they are so easy to work on and incredibly simple design. you can get the tank off in 10 minutes if you don't know what you're doing, the rear subframe pivots up to grant access to a lovely adjustable coilover (which was set beyond max height for barreling over boulders or somert)..
anyway i've wired in the lights to the grip controls, fitted a new rear brake light switch, added an ignition switch (they don't have anything as standard!), added a light to the rear plate (i will tidy this up, it looks shit). I've rejetted the carb which was fiddly with access, you need fingers like a seahorse surgeon, fitted a new seat concepts seat...
speedo to go on, then oil and filter swap and it's road something.. i'd say worthy.. haha
it looked like this:
and now sort of like this..
still feels lean to me, you fix that by lowering a collar on the carb pin..
meanwhile the XSR is the filthiest bike i have ever seen at the moment.. i cant follow uncs advice and not wash it all winter, it has an inch thick layer of salty crud across the rear end now and my mechanical sympathy is crying in the corner and rocking back and forth.. wash tomorrow then.. great bike, perfect commuter. some twunt in an FN2 did a massive wheelspin off the lights the other day trying to do what exactly?
get behind me nobba.. you can wheelie this thing in the wet ffs. who needs 4wd when you weigh feck all

Perfect for a winter 'hack' - helps working in a garage and not out on the drive!

car today.. friday so i can park and be warm
the CRF needs heated grips but i dont think the electrics will cope
