Could it not just be a snapped cable from what you're saying??
That's what I thought, but it isn't from the subsequent post.

I have the workshop manual for this bike.

The bit is called the lifter lever looking at the picture.

Reading through the manual, it sounds like the lifter lever is worn or broken.

Looks a fairly straight forward job if you are reasonably competent. . . . . .

thaks! yep, the lifter lever is loose.

i imagine as it twists there are other levers in the bowls of the engine that twist and disengage the clutch. i guess its these levers that are broken.

luckily other modes of transport to work so will get it fixed when back from hols. simple fix like cable i'd try myselft.

taking bits of the engine would be asking for trouble!

need some help from somone who knows more about engines than me (which i guess is just about everyone who posts on this thread )

on way home last night clutch went, manged to limp home the last 3/4 mile with the aid of a hill and not having to come to a complete stop

checked the bike - the clutch cable is still connected to the lever thingy on the side of the engine, and connected to the lever on the handlebars

however the lever thingy ont he side of the engine seems a bit loose and you can actually pull it out until it is stopped by the fairing.

now i dont know how this lever thingy connects to the clutch but imagine its broken and needs replacing or is it the whole clutch?

bike is a 51 plate with about 13000 miles, at least 5000 of which are communiting within london so maybe worth getting clutch replaced anyway??

thanks in advance gents
I'd have a go at fixing it for you but sounds like you're a long way away! We need a bit more details I think.

Slightly off topic, but as you are in Gosport I was wondering if you're at Sultan?

Just take your time and keep the bits you take off in order. I use those magnetic parts trays to keep all my "nuts" tidy
