the thing i like about the RR is it's even lighter than PL's version and feels slightly smaller. Also they don't make the F any more so if i decide to buy new or reasonably new i'm screwed (near new Fs are like rocking horse do do)
was never going to get anything quicker than a 600 for my first 'proper' bike, these are more than fast enough for me, hopefully i appreciate the steepness of my learning curve (hence the CB350)
BMs i thought too pricey and usually quite heavy so not really considered those, i'll have a dig
i want something i can manhandle to make up for my lack of experience and the CBR600 (RR and Fs) get very good 'user friendliness' ratings so they suit.. plus i know of a nice low mileage TT going cheap so may opt for that.. hmm

maybe an older sv1000 fully faired v-twin. a bit heavy, 190kg, but good torque and not too much power, 125bhp iirc for a litre bike. your height wont be a problem either.
a 600cc revving at 6000/7000 rpm for 70-80 mph makes my wrists/hands feel funny after an hour or so

hmm. fuel economy is an issue if i'm to use it loads. hoping the commute won't be much over an hour or i might as well use the car

I disagree - you won't be thrashing a 600cc bike at 70/80mph, my TT600 always felt happiest cruising at 90mph and was more economical than the S2000 is at that speed, as you'd expect really!
Spuffington - you definitely need to test ride both. I imagine you'll feel more comfy on a CBR600F (not RR) as a first bike TBH, but for 2 up work the VFR is much better - and Honda make hard luggage for it too, bonus!!

what do you get from a TT tank cruising at 90 Mike?
I'm hoping considerably better than an 1100kg S

heh. on my commute i'd need to fill up and then fill up again on the way back!
think the TT takes 18 litres

Nottm - bikes have small tanks I'm afraid! There are some bikes that give remarkable mrg figues - BMW F650GS's and the new F800's I think are particularly known for it, but my VFR800 empties itself in about 180 miles and is a 22 litre tank I think?
If you use a bike to commute over distance, you will be filling it up daily i'm afraid!
The TT is no better/worst than any other sports 600 of the same era..

150 mile round trip. i'd like to be able to do that on 1 tank ideally
