Danny, the training schools hire you bikes as part of the deal - I never owned a bike until after I passed my full test doing DAS.

If you do CBT and plan to ride around on a 125 for a while before passing a proper test then obviously you will need to buy. Then maybe buy a restricted bike depending on what test route you take.

Colin ran a 125 for a while before doing his DAS, whereas I did my DAS a month after my CBT, with no riding inbetween.

Test regime is currently changing though, and the if you are planning sitting it in teuchterland, I don't think the new Inverness "test centre" is running yet (6 month delay for new test anyway IIRC).

As Euan says bike hire is part of the deal. I think that so long as you are over 21 and you pass your test on a 45 bhp bike (broadly a 500cc twin) you can get anything you like afterwards: see

although I think that even this may be changing hence the recent rush to get through DAS recently. Check with some of those who have passed recently such as Rew (see earlier on this thread)

Best to do DAS with a bigger bike. They are much easier to ride than a 125 and you won't want to be on a restricted bike afterwards.

Not heard anything with regards to the restrictions changing, just the test. Main differences I was shown when I went to the local test centre ( they are one of the few centres in the country ready to go ) was that all the slow control, walking of the bike, emergency stop and U turns would be done off road. The additions would be a figure of 8 manouver and the brake and swerve.

DAS is the only way to go. The bigger bikes they provide you to learn on are easier to control than the 125's and you get to ride anything you want when you pass.

Wait till you get the fly boy stuff done first, the new test is not due while the end of March so still some time ( though crap weather ) but rumours from the DSA examiners and instructors was that they would not be surprised if only an other 4 centres would be operational ( councils causing problems with obtaining land ) so could be pushed back even further.

Edit: You have to slalom round some cones too

Bike dealers..... are they having the same problems off loading bikes like the car dealers. Was talking to a yamaha dealer today who had an 07 custom paint race replica R6 ( un registered ) but would not budge on the asking price of

I was talking to my local Yamaha dealer last week (I bought the Duke from him) and he told me that bike sales had been flat and that they were having trouble competing with the cheap deals from Suzuki.

Yamaha had asked him if he could take another 22 bikes at discounted prices but he had to tell them that he couldn't take them as he was already overstocked with trade-ins.

i went to look at some Honda's today. I am in love with the CBR 600 RR

doing my DAS test in Nov.. fingers crossed but i doubt i'll buy till next year. He offered me a brand new RR for
