I am sorry to be a complete n00b to this but if one wanted to learn to ride in two wheeled style how does one begin?
Can you ride a bike with a normal car licence up to a certain size of engine or do you need a bike licence specifically?

if you have a car licence you start with a cbt.
this is a one day course and not a test so you dont pass it as such. it is valid for 2 years and allows you to ride a bike or scooter upto 125cc with L plates. you cant take a passenger.
or you can do a direct access course (DAS) which is probaby 5-7 days for a beginner. you do this on a 500cc bike and do your bike test at the end of it. you can then go out and buy and R1 if you are over 21
personally i would do the cbt course (which anyway you have to do on the 1st day of your DAS) and see how you like it. get a 125 scooter or bike like honda cb125 to get some experiance and take it from there. you can then get away with a 2 or 3 day DAS.
cbt course i guess cost around

CBT & then Direct Access.
I'm fairly sure things have changed since I did my test you may need to do a theory test as well Dawn.
Fletch is the man to check with as he did it all very recently.
Or failing that give a local teaching centre a call and discuss. . .

Yeah, Talk to an instructor.
They will book you in for a CBT and, if you wish, book the DSA Course and practical test as well.
You will probably find there's a pretty long waiting list, as everyone seems to be having the same idea at the moment.
Before doing the practical test, you will have to have taken and passed the Theory test, which you can book yourself.

I'd recommend buying this to prepare for the theory test
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Driving-Test-Succe...19779384&sr=8-1
More for the practise Hazard Perception videos than anything else.
I'd already booked, taken, and passed the theory test before the date for the CBT came around
Do that asap, and it leaves plenty of time to re-test if you need to.

CBT is a whole day - I should know - took me 2.5 days to get through it
I thought you didn't need to do a theory test if you were young enough to have had to do one to get your car licence? (sadly I wasn't young enough)
